Clean production

We aim to continuously reduce the environmental impacts of our paper products throughout their whole lifecycle. Our papers are made of renewable material, recyclable and biodegradable and produced using bioenergy where possible.

Life-cycle sustainability is all about well-managed paper production. This is why we invest in maintenance and process improvements to continually optimise the environmental performance of our paper mills.

Resource efficiency – UPM's cornerstone

Sustainable by design

Our mills use the best available techniques (BAT) to ensure efficient and sustainable production of paper. We use raw materials, energy and water as efficiently as possible, and strive to minimise our air and water emissions. We have all the required management systems in place to continuously improve the production of safe, high-quality paper.

Our paper mills: environmental statements (EMAS)

All of UPM’s European paper mills and the Changshu paper mill in China are registered with the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), a voluntary environmental management system for companies and other organisations for improving, evaluating and reporting on their environmental performance on an annual basis.

Clean Run supports environmental performance and awareness

The Clean Run initiative aims to lessen the environmental impact of all UPM operations. The goal is to significantly improve the current level of environmental performance and awareness, including better risk management.

The campaign has been visible in the pulp and paper mills since 2011, and has become a proactive way of managing environmental operations at mills. Systematic reporting and follow-up of environmental deviations, including reporting of environmental observations, are in active use at all pulp and paper mills.

Together with improved information sharing, Clean Run audits have helped to identify development issues and related best practices. With all of the actions taken, the “Clean Run Way of Thinking” is starting to become part of daily routines.
